Best Impact-Resistant Shingles for Michigan Hail

GAF has two Class 4 lines. Timberline AS II uses GAF's SBS-modified asphalt, which GAF says gives it flexibility that resists cracking and lets it lay flatter in colder temperatures than its standard shingles, useful on a cool spring or fall install. Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat gets its rating from a fiberglass-mat technology instead; GAF notes that only UHDZ packages with the UltraMat logo and the UL 2218 Class 4 statement are Class 4. The popular Timberline HDZ is Class 3.

GAF is plain that hail damage is not covered under its limited warranty and that it makes no warranty about hail performance. What a certified installer can add is coverage for installation errors: under Silver Pledge, which we can register as a GAF Certified Plus contractor, that runs 15 years on AS II and UHDZ, versus 10 on HDZ.

ClimateFlex is the polymer-modified, Class 4 member of CertainTeed's Landmark family. That distinction matters when you compare quotes: standard Landmark and Landmark PRO are Class 3. It carries CertainTeed's lifetime limited warranty with 10-year SureStart protection, 15-year wind coverage at 110 mph that can be upgraded to 160 mph, and 25-year StreakFighter algae protection.

If you want a heavier luxury look, CertainTeed's Grand Manor and Presidential Shake IR are also Class 4. Plain Presidential Shake is Class 3, so check for the IR.

Every Malarkey shingle uses its NEX polymer-modified, rubberized asphalt, and for installs from January 1, 2023, Vista, its most popular architectural line, is Class 4. So are Legacy Scotchgard, its highest-performing architectural, and Windsor Scotchgard, its designer shingle. The economy Highlander line is Class 3.

Malarkey's shingle warranty is lifetime limited, with 110 mph wind coverage standard and up to 130 mph enhanced, and extended coverage when a Malarkey Certified Contractor installs them with Malarkey accessories.

StormFighter FLEX is TAMKO's Class 4 shingle, made with its ForceFX polymer and AnchorLock reinforcement, with a WindGuard extended wind warranty up to 160 mph. TAMKO says it can be installed down to 25°F. The older StormFighter IR no longer appears in TAMKO's current lineup.

HailGuard, launched in February 2026, is Class 4 with TAMKO's ImpactCore polymer-modified asphalt. TAMKO calls it the industry's first and only asphalt shingle system with a hail warranty: up to 20 years of hail coverage through the HailGuard Extended Limited System Warranty, with 160 mph WindGuard coverage on the full TAMKO system. It's sold in select regions, and "Beyond Class 4" is TAMKO's own term, not a UL class. Ask your roofer about availability.

Atlas has two Class 4 lines. StormMaster Shake uses Atlas's Core4 polymer-modified asphalt and is rated for 150 mph winds. Pinnacle Impact is polymer-modified and rated for 130 mph. Both use 3M Scotchgard Protector granules, and Atlas states a lifetime limited warranty against algae black streaks on StormMaster Shake.

Nordic is IKO's highest-performing line, polymer-modified and rated FM 4473 and UL 2218 Class 4. It carries a limited lifetime warranty with 15 years of Iron Clad full coverage for manufacturing defects, a 130 mph wind warranty and 10 years of algae protection. IKO's Dynasty and Cambridge are Class 3.

Two caveats. IKO says Nordic is available only in select markets, and we couldn't confirm it's sold in West Michigan. And IKO notes hail damage isn't covered by the warranty.
